Dunukofia Local Government Area has commenced the evacuation and desilting of blocked drainage channels across the council area as part of proactive measures to prevent flooding and protect lives, homes, businesses and public infrastructure.
The project involves the removal of accumulated silt, refuse, vegetation and other materials obstructing the free flow of water through drainage systems. It is expected to reduce waterlogging, improve sanitation and minimise the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.
The exercise is being carried out in identified flood-prone locations, major roads, markets, residential areas and other places where blocked drainage channels have disrupted the proper flow of stormwater.
Through the intervention, the local government aims to improve environmental conditions, protect roads from erosion and reduce the health risks associated with stagnant water, including the spread of mosquitoes and waterborne diseases.
Residents and business owners have been urged to support the project by avoiding the indiscriminate disposal of refuse into drainage channels, waterways and roadsides. The public is also encouraged to report blocked drainage systems and other environmental concerns to the appropriate local government authorities for prompt attention.
